Today, Annie and I were the official judges at the Caldera School in Caldera, Panama for the first grade class. We had to judge the cooking of two 1st grade students on verbal presentation of what they were presenting, taste, food presentation and something else that Annie and I had no idea what it was.

We're on our way to Denver from Bozeman, MT. via West Yellowstone and Yellowstone National Park. We had a wonderful time in Bozeman visiting with our 6th grandchild. Francie is a dream. She has the temperament of her grandfather. Never gets upset and smiles all the time. Life is good. The scenery getting here has been spectacular but nothing like my granddaughters beauty.

Today we were off to the Tucson Zoo. It's really quite a nic zoo with plenty of animals and exhibits. Yet, it's small enough to see it all in an hour or so. Then we went off to a Mexican restaurant for a great lunch. We are off to Bozeman, Montana tomorrow where we'll see our new granddaughter, Francie. Adios

We flew to Tucson, AZ. this past Sunday. We are here enjoying our son, his wife and our 3 grandchildren. We went and saw Disney's "UP" in 3D on Monday afternoon. To set the tone, Annie and I went to see Angels and Demons in Panama City before we left for the States. It was $2 each and $1.50 for popcorn and a soda. In Tucson we purchased 2 senior tickets and 2 children's tickets, a water and 3 medium sodas, 3 medium popcorn and a pretzel w/ cheese dish. Ready???????? $62.50. And that was matinee prices. YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!

My high school buddy, Jeff, has come and gone. He came down to visit and see Panama for a second time. He was here when he was 3-5 years old. That was a few years ago. After staying on the farm here in Boquete, we ventured to the Azuero peninsula for some exploring. I've been here 9 years and haven't been there before. It took us 5 days to get to Panama City. These photos are taken on the southern most shore of the peninsula, Playa Venao or Playa Venado.

We have had very unusual weather this year. The winds have been unrelenting and the rains are still around. We had a double rainbow yesterday. They are not that uncommon here. I saw a triple rainbow a few years ago.

Our last day in Boquete started off misting, blowing and at times raining. So we had a leisure day on the farm. A little breakfast, a trip downtown for some last minute shopping and some good old downtime.

Today was a visit to Paradise Gardens which is just down the street from us. It's a refuge for injured animals as well as a private collection of exotic bird. A baby anteater, sloths, large cats and many different birds were displayed in a natural garden setting.

I landed in Boston in a snow storm and it hasn't been above 20 degrees since I've been here. I'm off to Barrington R.I. tomorrow to visit with my daughter Jess and her family. It's supposed to be in the 40's this weekend. She and our 2 grandchildren are coming with me back to Panama for a little visit.

I hesitate to show these photos. When I go to Chicho's with his supplies, he always greets me with a big loud "Mickey". In spanish, Mike, is pronounced Mickey. I always want to know how he is doing and I always get a "regular" out of him. It doesn't show very well but it's a dirt floor.

For those who don't know my step-dad, Chicho, this is him. I deliver food to Chicho twice a month. He lives up in the mountains, up a step, rocky trail then levels out to a nice meadow. Anyway, Chicho hasn't been home the last 2 trips I've made. So today I was going to drive up to his house again to check on him. As I'm driving up the Volcancito road, there, standing in a driveway was Chicho. What a great relief. It turned out to be where his daughter lives. Typical Panamanian ways, I was invited into their humble home to sit down and meet the family. It really makes you feel good to be invited in. So I offered to take him home but only if I could bring him to our farm for a cup of coffee and a little tour. At times like this I really wish I was more fluent in Spanish. But somehow we communicate. So this was my special day.

A home in El Banco

A couple of days ago a small group of Rotary members, spouses and friends, went to visit a home that had a grandmother (83) the mother and her disabled daughter living together in their home. It was a 2 fold trip. The most important was to assess the needs of the family. The daughter has to be carried down a fairly step pathway to the outhouse. Also, there are no areas that the daughter can get outside and use her modest wheelchair. The ground is years of rutted clay. There are no men living with the family. Not great conditions. It was decided to cement walkways and a patio so that she can become a little more mobile. The second purpose was to show some of our new members what we do for projects and assistance.

Today was another special day. Annie and I and a couple of fellow Rotarians spent time at Casa Esperanza which is a school for children of the farm workers. Games, balloons and soccer along with lunch was provided.

Today was a great day. The weather has been perfect since we got back. The temps. in the high 60's - mid 70's. I wanted to take Chicho (my dad) something for New Years. When I was at his house last week I noticed a couple of empty pints of Gin on the floor. So, I brought him a bottle of Gin along with some snacks and bread. I think he was happy. It made my day.

What a wonderful Christmas present. We got back from our trip this AM and were greeted with our casita all decorated by our employees. They didn't want us to come home to a house not decorated for the Holidays. They scoured around the house and found the decorations and did this for us. How 'bout that Christmas tree???

You might recognize some of the features in the photos. We entered Rio De Janeiro, Brazil this afternoon. We are finally off the boat. Annie and I are staying at a hotel on Ipanema Beach for the night then on to Panama mid day tomorrow. Our latest journey is over. What a trip.

Buenos Aires

Out of all the places we visited, Buenos Aires was at the bottom. This really bothers me because Annie has been there twice and absolutely loves it. We went on a tour and the first 1/2 was through all the bad areas. Very depressing. It was hot and not very attractive. These pictures are of the port, Caminito (which is a dressed up tourist area) and a cemetery where we had only 15 minutes to visit because we had to wait over 20 minutes extra for 2 people who were wandering the streets in LaLa land. I'm not into large tour groups.

Was I in Broadway? The shows on board the boat were top notch. I kept asking other experienced cruiser if this was the norm for entertainment. It was wonderful. As you all know me, I'm not a theatrical type of guy but this was entertaining. We went back and saw the 2nd show some nights.

On to Montevideo, Uraguay

Next stop after the Falkland Islands was Montevideo, Uraguay. The weather was getting warmer and we visited another winery (Santa Rosa) that was amazing. All the wine you wanted with some fantastic Tango dancing and a wonderful lunch.

What a wonderful surprise. The beaches were like the Caribbean. White sand and clear water. A little different in temp. The water was 47 degrees. Unfortunately, most of the beaches have land mines that are left over from the British/Argentinean conflict. They are all fenced off. The weather again was perfect, as you can see. It must have been in the 60's. Very unusual for them.

The strangest things

I was out exploring the ship today and I ran across a section of the boat I hadn't seen before. It had the strangest pieces of machinery and people doing the oddest things with them. They were sweating and groaning. There was were even people laying all over the floor in the weirdest positions I have every seen. I kind of scared me so I won't go there again

Well, we made it around Cape Horn. It is not uncommon to have 30-40 foot seas. As you can see, it was almost dead calm and 47 degrees out. Lucky us.

Well, for those who have not been on a cruise ship or those that don't have a desire to, you have no idea what you are missing. There is as much as you want to do or as little. The food is spectacular and the entertainment is first class. The shore excursions are so organized you have no idea that you have 2500 fellow passengers with you. We chose this cruise because it gives us 7 out of 14 days at sea. I don't like going to a port everyday. We highly recommend this cruise. The main lobby is like a grand hotel in a city.

We got back in Santiago, Chile and took a bus to Valpariso, Chile to board the "Star Princess" cruise ship. This will be my first cruise. We spent one night in Valpariso at a place called Robinson Cruso Inn. The outside was all galvanized paneling and not much to look at. But, when you got inside it was spectacular. Not a bad idea for the property appraisal.

When we got to Mendoza, Argentina we stayed at a B & B in a nice quiet residential section of the city. Except it was across the street from a middle school. With school getting out on Friday, and we arrived on a Wednesday, we had 3 nights of school celebrations to serenade us to sleep. But, the wine tours made up for it all. Would you believe they told us that each empty oak barrell costs them $1200. Add that up.

Sorry I haven't written anything lately. As you probably know, Boquete has survived the terrible floods and rains. Annie and I are now on a trip through South America. Our first stop was Santiago, Chile. After an 8 hour delay leaving Panama we arrived in Santiago @ 3:00 AM. Not a good start. But everything has been great since. Internet service is very slow so I can't upload many photos.

After not touching a golf club for over 3 years, I was invited to Tucson, AZ for an invitational tournament with the Blizzard Cup up for grabs. It was only 18 holes but I was consistent and shot a 1 under with a bogey on the last hole. The weather was ideal and I was in a groove. My closest competitors were +4, +7 & +16. Because I won this tournament, I was invited to participate in the final tournament of the year which will be held tomorrow. It is a 36 hole tournament with the top 4 players from today invited into tomorrows tournament. I am psyched.

I took a ride late this afternoon and I saw an old friend of mine. I have no idea where he has been but "Bullwinkle" was sauntering through the trees on his way to having a late dinner. I think he had missed me also because he stood and looked at me for a long time.

Great day in Montana

Ry and I went to get his elk meat today. Ryan got a 750# bull elk the first week of bow season. We rode around some of the mountain roads and came across some wildlife. We got home and had homemade pasta with andouille (elk sausage) and watched the Red Sox game. Not a bad day.

I was in Denver and the "Rockies" doing some fishing with my buddy last week and now I'm in Bozeman, Montana with my son Ryan. Ry and I did a float down the Madison on a beautiful warm day yesterday. I hope to be in Libby, Montana later this week to do some more fishing with my fellow rotarian from Boquete, Panama. What a country!

I'm in Denver now. I flew here a week ago to visit my high school buddy and take in some fishing in the mountains. The foliage has started to change and what a show. The Aspens are in full color (yellow). Although I got out fished 32-2, the trip was spectacular. Oh yeah, it was in the upper 70's/low 80's for the 3 days in the mountains.

Annie, I and 6 other people went deep into the Comarca (land dedicated to the indigenous people of Panama) for 3 days and 2 nights. It was to evaluate what the needs are for the people. It was a great trip. Very basic accommodations and food but a priceless experience.

I had a guy come today, he was supposed to be here Monday) to clean the tree up with his chain saw. Yesterday afternoon another tree came down on top of the fallen one. What is going on. At least I have the guy for the whole day. I'm running out of trees.

Just as our projects were starting to dwindle, down comes a tree on top of the Orchid House. We can't replace the plastic this time of year (rains), so we'll have to wait till Jan. to do the new roof. It busted up some steel framing also. There were no winds just inches of rainfall. But, the tree broke off about 12' up the trunk. Huh????

Annie and I made it back to Panama today. We are staying at a hotel on the Panama Canal. The bridge is the "Bridge of the Americas" where North America and South America is seperated. Annie is watching a U.S. Coast Guard ship enter the canal. For those who haven't seen a Mango tree, now you have.

Our stay on St. Thomas is winding down. In the time we have been here it has rained a total of 2 hours. We love it but the Island needs much more rain. We'll be back in Panama next Friday (Aug. 1st) night and in Boquete on the 3rd. Annie and I hope to have one more night out for dinner and a few more days at the pool and the beach. Look for the rainbow and the beach at the end of it.

Remember when you could stop a gas pump right on the penny. Nowadays, it's like a slot machine. The numbers go by so fast there is no way to stop it on the dollar. Which brings me to another question. What's with the 9/10 of a cent. I don't ever remember having a 9/10 of a cent piece in my pocket. When you ask for 1 gal. of gas, how do you pay $4.559/10 per gal? Please explain.

Internet & snail's pace

Earlier, I had mentioned how the internet at this house is slower than a snail. How about a crab? This guy ( or gal) was lumbering across our patio this morning. His shell was the size of a baseball. For those who were here for our wedding, the homes that we stayed in our still the same. A developer has bought the property some 7 years ago and has changed the entrance and added some concrete roads. But the beach is still as beautiful as ever.

Well, we're here in the USVI. The house is incredible. More room than we need. The private beach is only a 5 minute walk away. One major problem. NO INTERNET. Only dial up at a snail's pace. Saturday was a memorable day because Annie stepped down as president of Club Rotario de Boquete after serving 2 years in that position. There was a large ceremony marking the passing of the guard. She gave a great speech and was presented with a gavel, flowers and a solid 1 minute standing ovation for her never ending support for Rotary. Now we can relax.

Today I left for home (Panama). I had the trip to remember. First is was in my hometown of Acton to visit M.J. and check on business. Then it was down to Rhode Island to see Jess, Jeff, Effie and Fischer. After record heat (97 & 96 degrees) I headed to L.A. to meet Annie and participate in Rotary Internationals annual conference. Universal Studios and Annie's 10 cousins where a hoot. We (Annie & I) spent Father's day at her cousins cheering the Celtics on. We were in the minority. Then I was off to Tucson while Annie flew home to Panama. Tucson was great as always. Seeing Brent, Di, Justin, Spencer & Marina was special. I'm now in Dallas waiting for my 5:30 PM flight to Panama. Thank you all so much for making this one of my most memorable trips to the States. Adios mi amigos.

Living in Panama has prevented me from keeping up with the new electronic game industry. Not that I was ever up on it. But, I was totally amazed at Brent, Di & the kids playing "Rock Band". With guitar, bass, drums & a mic hooked up to the TV, It was like Karaoke with the instruments. Dave Matthews better watch out.

Last night we went to the Tucson Country Club for a "dive in movie" featuring "Wipe Out". What a great concept. They served popcorn and food while the kids, and adults, swam and watched the movie. Brent and I strolled the golf course and enjoyed a great evening.
